About Peatlands Park Nature Reserve

Peatlands Park Nature Reserve, located near the village of Sandholes in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, protects a significant area of raised peat bog habitat, a rare and ecologically important landscape. The reserve houses the Fens Lough, a large lake offering diverse wetland habitats and is internationally recognized for its importance to wildlife, particularly bird species such as Greenland white-fronted geese and hen harriers. The park covers a mosaic of landscapes including bogs, woodlands, and open water, supporting a wide range of flora and fauna. Historical peat extraction has shaped much of the area, but conservation efforts since the late 20th century have focused on restoring and preserving the fragile peatland ecosystem. Visitors can explore over 5 miles (8 km) of marked trails, including boardwalks that traverse the bog, with excellent opportunities for birdwatching, nature photography, and quiet walks through native habitat. The affiliated Peatlands Discovery Centre provides educational exhibits about peat formation, local wildlife, and traditional peatland uses, enhancing visitor engagement. The park is renowned for its peaceful ambiance, accessible trails, and valuable conservation role, making it a key destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts interested in wetlands and peatland ecosystems in the UK and Ireland.
